Roles of collocation in L2 oral proficiency revisited: Different tasks, L1 vs. L2 raters, and cross-sectional vs. longitudinal analyses

چکیده

There is emerging evidence that collocation use plays a primary role in determining various dimensions of L2 oral proficiency assessment and development. The current study presents the results three experiments which examined relationship between degree association (operationalized as t scores mutual information scores) intuitive judgements comprehensibility (i.e. ease understanding). topic was approached from angles different task conditions (Study 1), rater background (first language or L1 vs. second L2) 2) cross-sectional longitudinal analyses 3). findings showed that: (1) emerged medium-to-strong determinant structured (picture description) compared to free (oral interview) production tasks; (2) with sufficient immersion experience, raters can demonstrate much sensitivity raters; (3) conversational experience associated more coherent mutually-exclusive combinations words speech, resulting greater

Feature selection, L1 vs. L2 regularization, and rotational invariance

We consider supervised learning in the presence of very many irrelevant features, and study two different regularization methods for preventing overfitting. Focusing on logistic regression, we show that using L1 regularization of the parameters, the sample complexity (i.e., the number of training examples required to learn “well,”) grows only logarithmically in the number of irrelevant features...

parsing preferences in structurally ambiguous relative clauses: l1 vs. l2

the present study attempts to investigate parsing preferences (early vs. late closure) of native and l2 learners of both english and persian when they read ambiguous relative clauses. the purpose is to find out if l2 learners process l2 linguistic input in the way monolingual speakers of that language do. the participants took tests including 10 test sentences plus 10 distractors, each followed...

Longitudinal Vs. Cross-sectional Analysis

The survey literature distinguishes cross-sectional and longitudinal designs, but most surveys conducted in practice are based on cross-sectional designs. The limitations of these cross sectional surveys are that they are confined to a specific point in time. That is, they provide us with a snapshot of a sample of a population at a single point in time. Since population characteristics constant...

Phonetic Encoding of Coda Voicing Contrast under Different Focus Conditions in L1 vs. L2 English

This study investigated how coda voicing contrast in English would be phonetically encoded in the temporal vs. spectral dimension of the preceding vowel (in vowel duration vs. F1/F2) by Korean L2 speakers of English, and how their L2 phonetic encoding pattern would be compared to that of native English speakers. Crucially, these questions were explored by taking into account the phonetics-proso...

Who's in Control? Proficiency and L1 Influence on L2 Processing

We report three reaction time (RT)/event-related brain potential (ERP) semantic priming lexical decision experiments that explore the following in relation to L1 activation during L2 processing: (1) the role of L2 proficiency, (2) the role of sentence context, and (3) the locus of L1 activations (orthographic vs. semantic). All experiments used German (L1) homonyms translated into English (L2) ...
